Pura Penataran Agung is the largest temple, the most sacred buildings and become the center of all temples and ritual activities that exist in the complex of Pura Besakih. In Pura Penataran Agung there are 3 Lingas, the shrines of the nature of God Tri Murti or tree main gods in Hinduism namely Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva which is the symbol of the Creator, Sustainer and the destroyer.
The history of Besakih temple.
In the history mentioned, the man who founded this temple besakih is a Hindu priest of India who has long lived in Java, his name is Rsi Markandeya. It is said that after meditating in Dieng mountain he received a revelation from the omnipotent/God to establish a sacred place on the island of Bali by planting sacred jar, containing Gems and Panca Datu (five precious metals) in the southwest of mount Agung the highest mountain in Bali, as the basis of the construction of the holy place. The Place where he plant the sacred jar would be called Basuki which means survive. Given the name Basuki, due to the success of Rsi Markandeya and his followers safe in carrying out their duty to establish an holy place. As time went on, Basuki's name changed to Besakih until now.
